Your team will receive a case developed by the SAIT Finance Society, under the guidance of faculty members from the business department. You and your teammates will collaboratively analyze the case and develop strategic solutions that meet the specified parameters and requirements for the client.
Throughout the competition period, you are expected to adjust and refine your investment strategies and justifications to align with the objectives outlined in the case.
At the conclusion of the competition, your team must prepare a final presentation that outlines your investment philosophy, technical and fundamental analyses, outcomes, market perspectives, and insights gained during the competition. Depending on logistical considerations, presentations may be conducted in person or pre-recorded. Following the presentations, your team will have the opportunity to address inquiries from fellow participants and attendees.

Portfolio Performance (50%)
Total portfolio return after 8 weeks.Performance relative to a benchmark index.
Innovation and Strategy (25%)
Creativity and uniqueness of the investment strategy. Consideration of market conditions and economic outlook.
Risk Management and Diversification (15%)
Use of risk metrics (e.g., Sharpe Ratio, beta, drawdown). Broad asset class and sector representation. Ability to manage risk, diversify the portfolio, and respond to market fluctuations.
Final Proposal and Presentation (10%)
Professionalism and clarity of the report. Convincing pitch to win Ms. Harts business. Teams will present their investment strategy and performance in a final presentation to a panel of judges (please see ‘Competition Rules and Parameters’).
Teams consist of up to 3 members. Each team will be required to formulate a team charter outlining internal communication methods, conflict resolution, and designation of a team leader for communication purposes.
The team leader alone will follow the steps under the ‘TMX Simulator Setup’ to open a simulation account.
Each team will create a virtual portfolio with a starting balance of $100,000 CAD using the TMX Trading Simulator. Any additional cash deposits on transaction sheet at any point during the competition will result in disqualification. No trades are to be made after competition end.
Prior to the start of the competition, all teams must share their portfolio links with the organizers for transparency as outlined in the TMX Simulator Setup. The portfolio links will be used for tracking and performance evaluation.
Teams are allowed to trade options, futures or any other investment vehicle within the simulator. All contracts must expire before the competition end date (March 14th, 2025).
Final returns will be calculated based on both realized and unrealized gains as of market close on March 14th, 2025. The closing prices of securities in the portfolio will be used for valuation.
All communications between teams and management should be made by the elected team leader only.
Teams are allowed and encouraged to use other financial resources and software when researching investments although all trades must be conducted within the TMX Trading Simulator. Some useful tools can be found under ‘Additional Resources’.
Each team will be required to create a final in person presentation that outlines their investment philosophy, technical and fundamental analyses, successes and/or failures, market and investment outlook, and any learning opportunities experienced throughout the competition.
Teams are strongly encouraged to record their portfolio returns on a regular basis for later analysis.
